Typically zip codes and postal codes are utilized for the purpose of facilitating delivery of packages by mail (mail). In certain countries, such as that of the U.S., zip codes are used , while in other countries such as Nigeria postal code can be used.

Nigeria has been divided up into 6 geopolitical zones each of which shares the same ethnicity and the same practices of culture and the same historical background. Geopolitics have contributed to the efficient distribution to resources of the federal government. It was established during the administration of the president Ibrahim Babangida.

Six geopolitical areas comprise the North-East region, which is comprised mainly from the Kanuri ethnic group. It is home to six states: Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, and Yobe. In the North-West region is mostly composed from people belonging to the Hausa Fulani ethnic group and includes seven states: Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, and Zamfara.

The North-Central region, also referred to by the name of “the middle belt” that has the most number of states, is primarily composed from people belonging to the Tiv ethnic group. It has seven states, including Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nassarawa, Niger, and Plateau. The South-East region is composed primarily from the Igbo ethnic group. With the least number of states. Five states fall within the Southeast region. Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo.

The South-South region consists part of Ijaw tribes. Ijaw ethnic group, which includes six states, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River State, Delta, Edo, and Rivers. The last geopolitical region is known as the South-West region, which is dominated by Yoruba tribes, which consist of states like Ekiti, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, and Ondo.

How do you decode Nigerian Postal Code?

Nigerian postal codes consist of numbers that comprise six numbers. NIPOST is which is the Nigerian Postal Service, divides the country into nine regions which comprise the first number in the number. The third and second numbers, when combined with the first, form the dispatch districts to sort out incoming mail.

The last three digits indicate the delivery address. The delivery location could be any of the following: an office of a postoffice or a rural location or an urban zone.

Lagos is the city with its lowest postcode, 100001. The head of the postal office across all regions in Nigeria has the postal code that ends with 0001. Thus, Garki Main HO located in Abuja is a zipcode 900001. Lokoja is in Kogi has 270001 while Port Harcourt has 500001. The smallest zip code is 100001, while the most expensive is 19982002. There are postcodes for other states of Nigeria like Enugu Zip code: 400001 and Imo state has 460001.
