Cedar shake roofs add a unique artistic touch to homes and other structures. Because they are delicate, they need special care and maintenance to keep them looking beautiful and last for as long as possible.

Cedar shake roofing is at risk from Moss. Moss buildup over time can cause leaks and block the flow water. If left untreated, moss can also absorb moisture and soil. This can cause damage to cedar shake roofing.

It is possible to remove moss from a cedar roof in a cost-effective and safe manner. It is important to be careful with the method you choose because of the delicate nature the cedar roof shingles. Here are some key considerations and tips on how to remove moss from a cedar shake roof.

1. Take out the Source of Moss

Cedar shake roof moss can be avoided by removing trees from your roof that are too high or too low. To keep your roof free of moss, it is best to maintain a steady pace with tree trimming. It’s possible for moss to accumulate on a cedar shake roof and cause it to begin to decay. This will greatly reduce the roof’s lifespan.

2. Install Copper or Zinc Strips

Copper or zinc strips are sometimes installed by cedar shake roof owners to cover the vent or ridge cap of their roofs. These strips can prevent the growth of mold, algae, and moss on cedar shake roofs. These strips, if installed correctly, can help to prevent the need to remove cedar shingles and moss.

3. Use the right cleaning solutions

It is important to only use specific cleaning products if moss develops on your cedar shake roof. Chlorine or oxygen bleach mixed in water is the best way to get rid of moss on a cedar roof. These bleaches can be used to kill algae and mold from cedar shake roof surfaces. They also give a clean, tan-colored appearance. The right bleach can remove wood fibers that have weathered over the years.

How to clean a Cedar Shake Roof

Use a weak bleach mixture and water to start. Always use a weak sprayer, or a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean the area. You can increase the bleach level if you are not seeing results. Be careful, too much bleach can cause too much fiber to be removed from the surface.

4. Avoid Power Washing

It’s safer to remove moss from a cedar roof than to power wash it. While it is possible to safely power wash cedar shake roofs, improper power washing can cause severe damage. Consider the cost of a cedar shake roof, so it is best to avoid power washing.

5. Hiring an experienced professional

Consider hiring an expert to remove cedar shingles and moss. It is not easy to repair, install and maintain cedar shake roofing. Make sure you hire an experienced company.
