Okay, you have decided that outside SEO services are necessary for your company. You’re now stuck with one question: How do I find the best SEO company?
If you don’t have a solid understanding of search engine optimization, it can be challenging to vet professional SEO firms.

It’s something we have seen many times. One company starts looking for SEO services. But, they don’t know where or how to begin. This post is intended to be a guide for business owners to see past the BS and avoid the scammers.

To get their opinions, we reached out to many SEO experts. We compiled this list based on their feedback.

Note: You don’t have to ask each SEO agency or consultant every question. You should evaluate questions 1, 3, 4 and 7 for each provider. However, the remaining questions could be a great source to do additional analysis.

1. Learn their history

You can search for SEO providers on sites such as Yelp, Facebook, Google My Business and Facebook. To get an idea of what a bad, average or great experience with this company might be, check their average rating and read some of their 1, 3 and 5 star reviews.

For any business with a long track record, there will be some negative reviews. However, if you see a lot of negative reviews, it is a warning sign.

2. Ask about their SEO processes

Each SEO company’s processes will be different. Their team should be comfortable speaking about these processes. Do not hesitate to ask for a breakdown of SEO techniques and deliverables at each stage.

Ask them what steps they take during an SEO audit if they mention it.
Ask them how they locate keywords that are relevant to your inquiry if they say they do keyword research.
Ask them what technical SEO means if they mention it.

If you are still not sure, ask for clarification about any deliverables. The salesperson’s role is to make these deliverables understandable for everyone.

3. Ask about their expectations regarding SEO services

We’ll occasionally talk with prospects who believe that ranking on search engine results pages is an overnight task. It can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months for SEO results to show any real results. We’ll tell you, any SEO company that claims to be able to get you on Google’s first page in one week is lying.

Although short-term results are impressive, they are not common. Ask about SEO services next time you ask. Find out what a successful campaign looks like and what results to expect.

4. Ask about past SEO work

Ask to see case studies from past clients after you have heard their benchmarks. These may not be possible for all firms, especially younger ones. These case studies are a great way to see the potential for great results with a particular service.

Marketers love to highlight outliers. It is important to note that the results in this case study don’t necessarily reflect the actual metrics you would see if working with the firm.

5. Ask about their transparency regarding their progress

Many reputable SEO Birmingham companies will communicate clearly with you, but some may not. It is important to work with SEO companies that are open and willing to show you the progress of their projects. Transparency in your work and the status all deliverables should be a priority.

6. Ask your SEO company for information about reporting

Reputable SEO companies will offer some type of reporting to clients for their ongoing relationships. Ask for a sample of the report they send to clients. Ask about their primary metrics.

Ask them what tools they use to report on SEO. Google Analytics, Google Search Console and Ahrefs are our favorite tools. Do you have the right to access any of these tools?

A good SEO company will provide metrics such as backlink count, search engine ranking for high-priority keywords and organic traffic improvement. These metrics can be tied back to your company’s revenue by great firms.

SEO is crucial to any business’s success. According to 57% of B2B marketers, SEO generates more leads that any other marketing strategy. These questions will help you to battle even the most skilled SEO pros.
