Comedian Joe Lycett revealed some unexpected news on Friday night as he announced the birth of his first child.
The stand-up comic, 36, broke the news to surprised fans on social media just days on from revealing he was in a relationship with a mystery woman. “I am LOVING being a dad but sadly I think this now means I can’t get out of going on Rob and Josh’s f**king podcast,” Joe joked as he introduced his son on Instagram.
Speaking on a podcast earlier this month, the new dad opened up about how he defines his sexuality and the struggle that comes with people assuming he is gay despite the fact he has a female partner.
Chatting to RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season two finalist Bimini, Joe reiterated the fact he is pansexual, meaning he can be attracted to anyone regardless of their gender identity. Revealing his current relationship status, he explained: “It’s interesting now, being in a long-term relationship with a woman, because loads of people are like: ‘Sorry, what?’
“I use the term bisexual when I just want to give a quick answer because people understand that. But I think the most accurate way of describing myself is pansexual, in that I’m not attracted to people just because of their gender.” He then went on to share minimal details about the lady in his life.
Joe revealed his long-term female partner doesn’t work in showbiz so he refers to her as Denise when chatting about her publicly in order to keep her identity private – something she doesn’t care for. “I call her Denise because she hates the name. So, I live with Denise,” the cheeky prankster joked on The Pieces podcast.
Reflecting further on his sexuality, Joe went on to recall: Pretty much all the biphobia I had when I first came out as bi was from… elder gay men who were like, pick a side. And I kind of get that as well, because, you know, some of them died for it. They were in that era. It was illegal for them.
“So, for someone [like] me to come along and go, well, I’m a bit of this, I’m a bit of that, must be really annoying. They’re like: ‘Well, I had to put my cards on the table and say I was gay, then go through all the s**t that came with that’. I get it but it would be nice to live in a world where everyone just chilled the f**k out.”

The Brummie comic announced his exciting baby news on Instagram on Friday night, sharing a snap of himself cradling a newborn baby as shared he had become a father. Captioning the sweet shot of his son, Joe told his followers: “An appreciation post from me for the extraordinary @bham_womens hospital. My first encounter with them was years ago when they looked after a pal of mine through surgery, and then most recently when they masterfully welcomed a little boy into the world, who happens to be my son.
“The care and compassion his mum and he received was exceptional; from the antenatal classes, incredible midwives, consultants, doctors, nurses and the ongoing care in the community. We also loved their baked potatoes. Birmingham is so lucky to have them and I will be forever grateful for everything they’ve done.”
He went on to joke: “I am LOVING being a dad but sadly I think this now means I can’t get out of going on Rob and Josh’s fucking podcast. We will not be taking any press requests about this as we have already sold the rights to the first family picture to Autotrader.”
