A mechanical estimator is an individual who estimates the cost of a project in an industrial or construction environment. The professional must be familiar with the industry they work in, as well as the rates for machinery, manpower and delivery. A mechanical estimator might work in a construction or industrial company. He or she will create an estimate for a job and then present that estimate as a bid to the customer.

Sometimes, the mechanical estimator is only one part of an estimate team for a job. The mechanical estimator will only be responsible for the cost of mechanical applications. Another type of estimator might handle other aspects of the job such as labor costs, construction costs, delivery, or more. This is typically only true for large projects, or those with extremely complex mechanical or construction applications. The head estimator is responsible for supervising the work of all estimators involved in a project.

There are many qualifications required to be a mechanical estimator. While some companies require a college degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, others will allow entry-level workers to train to become mechanical estimators. This job requires basic math skills, excellent computer and communication skills, as well as a good understanding of the industry where the estimator works. It is possible that the estimator will be trained on the job, even if he or she has a relevant college degree. A job candidate might even be required to complete an apprenticeship. During this time, he or she will be under the supervision and guidance of a senior estimator.

The most difficult task for a mechanical estimator is problem solving. He or she will need help to determine how to finish a job safely and effectively while staying within the budget of the customer and meeting the company’s profit targets. The estimator must figure out how to reduce the cost of the job without compromising safety or efficiency if the bid is too high.
