Professional dancer Karen is part of the cast, alongside Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda the good witch, while Cynthia Erivo takse on the role of Elphaba, the wicked witch. It was actually first announced in 2012, but multiple delays due to the pandemic saw the release pushed back, with it finally going to cinemas on Friday, November 22.
In its first weekend, the movie raked in $112.5 million in the US alone, with a worldwide total of $162.5 million, meaning the musical broke even in the first few days, after having a $150 million budget. It’s broken numerous records, including becoming the biggest global opening for a film based on a Broadway show already, with 2012’s revered Les Miserables making $103 million.
Ariana has beaten Lady Gaga’s A Star is Born – which made $42.5 million – to achieve the biggest domestic opening for a pop star. It’s already also ahead of Harry Styles’ Don’t Worry Darling ($19.3 million) and Britney Spears’ Crossroads at $14.5 million.
The film currently stands at an 8.2 out of 10 rating on IMDB with 30,000 votes and a 90% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It has a staggering audience rating of 96% on the website. Wicked marks the first of the two-part adaptation of the musical, which was directed by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman and was based loosely on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel.
