Mikel Arteta reviews Brighton defeat

Arsenal have reportedly decided on how much they’d accept in order to part ways with record-signing Nicolas Pepe this summer – and it could see them taking a huge hit on what they paid for him.

The Ivory Coast international arrived at the Emirates in 2019 for a club-record fee but has failed to live up to his initial billing and has struggled to hold down a regular place in Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up in recent seasons. And the Gunners are now said to be willing to cut their losses on the former Lille star this summer – for the right fee.

It comes as the Gunners believe they have an advantage in the race to secure Leicester City playmaker James Maddison’s signature ahead of bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur. And Mikel Arteta is said to have cost Arsenal the chance to have “one of best midfielders in the world” at the club.

Here are Mirror Football’s latest Arsenal headlines.

Arsenal miss out on midfielder

Matteo Guendouzi’s Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli believes the young Frenchman is on his way to becoming one of the “best midfielders in the world”.

The former Gunner joined Ligue 1 side Marseille on loan last summer and will officially become their player in the summer transfer window after the French club’s president Pablo Longoria confirmed clauses in the deal had been met. And it appears his current club have been left very happy with his performances this season, with his manager heaping praise on him ahead of their round of fixtures at the weekend.

If Guendouzi does develop as Sampaoli predicts it could come as a huge blow to Arteta and Arsenal, with the 22-year-old set to bring in a reported fee of just £9million at the end of the season.

Signing eyed from Premier League rival

Arsenal believe they have a big advantage in the race to sign Leicester City’s James Maddison.

The Gunners are reportedly set to go head-to-head with bitter north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur for the playmaker’s signature this summer, who could be available for around £60million. But Maddison’s glowing reference of Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka could suggest the Leicester star would be keen to link up with him on the pitch.

And that could give Mikel Arteta the chance to get one over bitter rivals Spurs and land Maddison’s signature.

Pepe price revealed

Arsenal are ready to take a £47million transfer hit on record signing Nicolas Pepe.

The club’s record signing is set to enter the final year of his contract at the Emirates and Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is said to be willing to part ways with him in the summer transfer window. Pepe arrived at Arsenal for a massive £72million fee from Lille in 2019, but the club are now said to be willing to accept offers of £25million should they receive any at the end of the season.

And that could mean the Ivory Coast international’s time at the Emirates comes to an end this summer.
