Mikel Arteta reviews Brighton defeat

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said his side were ‘sloppy’ in possession in their 2-1 defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

The Gunners were unable to outscore their opponents in a loss which seriously hampered their top-four chances. Former striker Ian Wright had warned his old side that the goals would dry up if youngsters Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe slowed down, with the duo unable to get on the scoresheet over the weekend.

With so much going on in the game, both on and off the ball, there may be a number of things missed over the course of the 90 minutes which the Mirror has analysed.

Here are Mirror Football’s latest Arsenal headlines.

Arteta discusses loss

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was forced to watch on as his side fell to defeat on Saturday afternoon to Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Gunners were without a number of key players, most notably Thomas Partey in midfield, as the Seagulls took advantage of a lacklustre attacking effort on the part of Arsenal. A Martin Odegaard constellation goal wasn’t enough to salvage anything from the match and Arteta said after that the atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium was ‘cold.’

We created a cold atmosphere, an atmosphere we weren’t comfortable with. When we tried to change it, it was too late,” Arteta said.

Wright’s goal prediction correct

Ian Wright was proven right following Arsenal’s loss against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

The former Arsenal striker told CBS Sport last month that the club could struggle for goals despite youngsters Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith-Rowe, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli all impressing throughout the course of the season. The Gunners way of playing was believed to be predictable by Wright.

“The only thing that worries me is if those guys stop scoring where’s the goals coming from?” Wright asked.

Missed moments

Arsenal have had a week to forget following back-to-back defeats.

The latest setback against Brighton has left their top-four chances up in the air, with rivals Tottenham Hotspur playing hours after the Gunners and a win would increase the gap between fourth and fifth – Spurs ended up beating Aston Villa 4-0. Arsenal’s defeat highlighted a number of issues, from their poor goal output to how much they miss midfielder Thomas Partey.

There’s also the problem at left back now that Kieran Tierney is out for the rest of the season.
