Thousands of householders have taken up the council’s offer of a second free recycling bin. Birmingham residents were given the option of applying for a new ‘green’ lidded bin to dispose of their unwanted metal, glass, tins and plastics.
The move was introduced to drive up recycling rates in the city. The existing blue bin would be used for paper waste.
More than 5,300 applications were made when the council made the offer in the summer. The council receives a payment for unwanted paper and card waste which is then reinvested back into services

POLL: Have you started your Christmas shopping yet?
CounMajid Mahmood, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We know lots of people want to recycle as much as possible, and the standard recycling bin doesn’t give them the capacity they need. Where people have the capacity and want a second bin, we can offer one.
“We get the benefit of increased income from the paper and card recycling contract, enabling us to reinvest into services for the people of Birmingham. This is a positive, practical, move that shows we will do whatever we can to help citizens manage their waste.

“We have now had 5,323 expressions of interest. We‘re grateful so many people are keen to recycle as much of their waste as possible.
“However, this exceptional level of demand means our supplies are currently limited. If you have requested a second recycling bin, we will deliver as soon as we can.
“I want to offer a big thank you to those who have made request for their patience and interest in this offer. If you haven’t asked yet, but still want one, please get in touch and we will add you to the list.
“Deliveries of the second bin are being done in a triaged way that also ensures other urgent requests are handled in the appropriate order – such as the replacement of missing or broken bins or when a new property is built and needs bins.”
The council will take away the pod from the original recycling bin, as it is no longer needed. The pod will be reused or recycled.
. Anyone who wants a second recycling bin can order one on the council’s website.
