The Queen stepped in to change Prince Louis’ name, according to reports. The child turns four today, with the Palace releasing pictures of him to celebrate.
In 2018, Kate Middleton gave birth to her third child – but Her Majesty stepped in over the name, according to royal sources. Prince William and Kate ended up giving him the name Louis Arthur Charles.
He was named after the head of state stepped in before he was born to overwrite a rule put in place by her grandfather King George. The rule said great-grandchildren would not automatically become Prince or Princess when born through the male line.

The Queen is reported to have stepped in to ensure Louis got the title, though. Prince Louis is fifth in the line of succession to the British throne, behind his grandfather, father and older siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
He is the first British prince to be ranked behind an elder sister in the line of succession. This follows the implementation of the Perth Agreement, which replaced male-preference primogeniture with absolute primogeniture.
Louis started his education at the Willcocks Nursery School, near his family’s home in Kensington Palace, in April 2021. Last December, he made his red carpet debut accompanying his parents Kate and Wills to a pantomime just before Christmas.
