The global semiconductor shortage has not only led to an international shortfall in electrical products like smartphones, but modern cars now rely heavily on the chips to function. The lack of said chips are estimated have cost the US economy $240 billion in 2021, with industries missing out on sales as production stagnates.
If you have visited your local car showroom recently, the lack of cars isn’t as a result of social distancing, but a deep supply crisis which experts at Auto Express predict will not be fully solved for more than two years. As semiconductors are used to almost unimageable amounts in the global computing, phone and electronic industries, car manufacturing is at an disadvantage.
This is because chip producers tend to prioritise larger clients. According to reports, car firms are responsible for just three percent of the revenue received by semiconductor producers. There were 932 billion of the chips produced in 2020 for use in every imaginable electronic device, yet there was still a shortage.

In cars, semiconductors are used for a whole host of functions such as navigation, infotainment systems and traction control, so the shortage have greatly impacted production. Those who have ordered new cars have been left furious by delays, with many having to wait up to a year for delivery. The following times have been quoted for the arrival of new cars, bought in spring 2022 and depends on the model.

- BMW – 4 to 5 months
- Renault 6 to 7 months
- Porsche – 2 to 12 months
- Ford – 3 to 7 months
- Kia – 2 to 4 months
- Volvo – 2 to 3 months
- Dacia – up to 4 months
