ITV Coronation Street viewers have been left taken aback by an announcement over Barbara Knox. Barbara, who plays Rita in the soap, will have her career celebrated by ITV on Friday evening with a special episode.
Taking to Instagram, the official Coronation Street account posted a snap of Barbara with Bradley Walsh. In its caption, Corrie confirmed: “Barbara Knox At 90. Friday 13th October. 9pm. ITV1. It’s going to be a special one.” Angie replied: “No way is she 90, my jaw is on the floor, I don’t believe it.”
English, Swedish, Danish typed: “She still looks as beautiful as ever.” Jay said: “How amazing does she look at her age – wow! Happy birthday.” Terry said: “Happy Birthday Barbara I have been watching yo for 50 years! (Canadian Fan)” Stay Positive said: “I’ll have to record this I miss Rita she’s barely on the soap anymore maybe she’ll get more scenes now that Jenny’s moved in I think Sharon should come back again because when Sharon was there Rita had a storyline and, I think a lot of the older characters who have been there for years should get a storyline each I can’t remember the last time when Mary had a storyline or Izzy.”

“By far my favourite in corrie big happy 90th Birthday hope you have a fantastic day if I looked like you at 90 ill be doing well,” another said. “Happy Birthday Barbara! I feel like we are family since I was just a toddler when my mom tells me I insisted on watching Coronation Street. She could never understand how I understood the accents on the show, I said, mommy I understand your Polish accent so I understand them. You are the the GOAT..greatest of all time,” commented another.
Matt typed: “Look forward to watching Barbara Knox Documentary it Should Be Very Look Happy 90th Birthday” Em said: “She looks fabulous Happy Birthday Barbara.” And Shura Lea said: “Oh wow happy birthday Barbara.” On the ITVX website, about the show, they say: “Coronation Street royalty Barbara Knox will celebrate her milestone 90th birthday with a very special one off documentary.
“The street stalwart, who has played the iconic Rita Tanner continuously for over half a century, will join Bradley Walsh as she looks back on the highlights from an illustrious career in television and theatre. Produced by ITV Studios Daytime for a peak time audience, the programme will trace Barbara’s first footsteps into showbiz before her first appearance on Coronation Street in 1964.
“Barbara will also share her most treasured memories from the role which has made her famous across the world, revisiting the site of the infamous Tram accident in 1989, and reflecting on the moment she was awarded an MBE in 2010. The documentary will also feature candid interviews with a number of Barbara’s co-stars past and present, celebrating Coronation Street’s longest serving actress and the impact she has had on television screens.
